News From Parish Council Meeting, 22nd March 2018
Posted: Mar 23, 2018

Village Hall...volunteers have now completed parts of the Village Hall refurb plan – the kitchen has been completely revamped, main lighting changed, stage has been removed and made good, a hatch through to the kitchen installed, front and rear entrance canopies have been replaced. Thanks are extended to all volunteers involved but particularly Michael Bobyn, Jon Fryer, Keith Rhodes and Steve Edkins. Steve who has led the project to date has now stepped down. The next stage in the refurb plan will include replacing the heating system and installing a new PA system.

Red Lion…one of the Parish Council’s objectives for this year is to secure a sustainable village pub within the Red Lion development. A village meeting was held on 12th March, at which around 80 parishioners attended, to discuss options for the Red Lion. A significant number of people have put their names forward as either interested investors or additionally as members of an organising Consortium.

New data regulations… the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into place on May 25th this year. This means that all data held by the Parish Council will be more highly regulated than before. One of the necessary actions will be that all parishioners will be asked to opt in (again) to the village email service and to holding their personal details as part of the Thurgarton Emergency Plan.

Village Spring clean… will take place on Saturday 14th April, so please come along and help to keep our village lovely. We’ll be clearing rubbish, cleaning signs and generally sprucing up our village, meeting at the War Memorial at 10:30am.

Date of Next Meeting...The next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 26th April at 7.30 pm at the Village Hall.

News From Parish Council Meeting 22nd February 2018
Posted: Feb 26, 2018

The latest Parish Council (PC) meeting was held at the Village Hall, this will continue to be the venue in the future. All parishioners are welcome to attend these meetings which take please every 4th Thursday in the month. Main points from the meeting this month are:-

Red Lion…The recent PC survey, which asked for parishioners who were interested in becoming part of a consortium to buy the Red Lion, resulted in 28 positive responses. The results of Neighbourhood Plan surveys carried out in 2017 were clear that the vast majority of parishioners wanted a good pub in the village. One of the PC’s objectives for this year is to secure a sustainable village pub within the Red Lion development. So, the PC have been in discussion with the planned developers of the Red Lion, and those parishioners who expressed an interest in the consortium will be invited to a meeting in March.

Village Hall... The Village Hall (VH) working party of volunteers, initiated by the PC and led by Steve Edkins, have started on the VH refurbishment work. To date the kitchen has been refurbished, light bulbs have been changed to LED lighting, the entrance canopy has been replaced, all electrics are being reviewed, the stage has been removed and a hatch to the kitchen has been installed. Approval was granted at the PC meeting to replace the heating system which will provide greater efficiencies. All of this work has been done by a handful of volunteers, we need more people to assist please. So, if anyone would like to volunteer for skilled or unskilled work please contact Steve Edkins on 07857 526429 or 831086.

Dog Fouling… a number of parishioners attended the meeting to complain about dog fouling on Priory Park and generally around the village. Parishioners are asked that if they see anyone neglecting to ‘scoop the poop’ then they could mention to the dog owner how unacceptable this anti-social behaviour is. The PC is considering installing a mobile camera, to be stationed around the village, photos of offenders may be shown on a ‘wall of shame’.

Speeding … a number of parishioners attended the meeting to complain about speeding drivers, on all the roads within the village. The PC will be measuring the affect of the 30 mph stickers on Beck St, with a view to taking this initiative to the whole village if it is deemed to be effective. The PC will also be reviewing other methods of encouraging drivers to slow down whilst they drive through our village.

Date of Next Meeting...The next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 22nd March at 7.30 pm at the Village Hall.

News From Parish Council Meeting 25th January 2018
Posted: Jan 29, 2018

Village Hall... Parish Council (PC) now has responsibility of Trustee for the Village Hall with the daily management still delegated to the TCA. A Village Hall (VH) working party of volunteers, initiated by the PC and led by Steve Edkins, have put together a VH refurb plan, which will cost £5-10,000 if a large proportion of the work can be done by volunteers, It was agreed at the Jan PC meeting to commence the work ASAP. Existing TCA funds will be used initially with the PC seeking additional funds from elsewhere to cover this substantial work. If anyone would like to volunteer for skilled or unskilled work please contact Steve Edkins on 07857 526429 or 831086

The Precept… is the tax that we all pay as a contribution to Thurgarton Parish through our Council Tax. Next year, 2018/19, the precept will be 15% more than last year. An average Band D property which paid £26.75 this year will now pay £3.18 more next year at £29.93 for the year. The 15% increase was deemed necessary to assist with the cost of the Village Hall refurbishments and to add to the disposable income to be spent on the Parish.

Parish Council Meetings… will be held at the Village Hall from now on.

Beck SMS Alarm service… which went live late last year, was used for the first time at 6am on 30th December when the water level in the Beck breached the first trigger level of 60cm, and SMS messages were sent to all those who have signed-up for this service.

Date of Next Meeting...The next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 22nd February at 7.30 pm at the Village Hall.

Annual Thurgarton Boxing Day Duck Race
Posted: Dec 17, 2017

Come and race your ducks on the Beck on Boxing Day in this exciting annual village event.

The Duck Race will start at approx. midday with an entrance fee of £1 per duck, registration from 11:30am.
Ducks will be dropped into the Beck from one of the bridges, and the first to pass the declared finish line will be the winner.

We will probably need to run 3 heats and a final depending upon numbers.

As it takes so long to register ducks on the day it would save me loads of time if you would please register here and you will receive a confirmation email back.

Also, please assume that there will be 3 heats, and a final, and I’ll split your ducks across the heats as necessary. Please let me have the right money on the day.

50% of the entry fees will be sent to the Help for Heroes charity and the other 50% will be distributed to 1st, 2nd and 3rd ducks.
Please note that you will need to bring your own duck(s).

The only rule to this race – is that there are no rules! Therefore, if necessary, I will be the final arbiter.

Regards, Tina

News From Parish Council Meeting, 26th October
Posted: Oct 30, 2017

Planning Application 17/01890/FUL Land to the rear of the Red Lion Pub for a change of use to 2 Gypsy pitches together with utility buildings and amenities... 50 or so parishioners attended the Parish Council (PC) meeting to express concerns over this planning application. The PC requested and has been granted a further month to provide Newark & Sherwood District Council (NSDC) with their comments. I can now confirm that all parishioners now also have until 23rd November 2017 to provide NSDC with their comments, and all parishioners are encouraged to either send comments of acceptance or objection to NSDC. To validate any objections the PC have been asked to provide parishioners with planning policy information to include in emails or letters. A village email, with this information, is planned to be sent on 31st Oct.

Speeding… following many complaints to the PC regarding cars speeding on Beck St it was agreed to spend £89.94 on 30mph wheelie bin stickers. There is evidence that this type of regime has worked elsewhere. If we find that this works on Beck St then it may be extended to other areas of the village. We are also liaising with local businesses/organisations whose employees use Beck Street rather than Station Road to access A612.

Environment… the Autumn Village clean up took place on 14th October. Lots of parishioners turned out to take time to tend to our lovely village. Volunteers took part in litter picking, cleaning road signs, cleaning the war memorial and tending to the green areas of the village. Thanks to all of you who took part.

Environment… I’m delighted to report that Cllr Denise Bryant has secured full sponsorship of a 3m living Christmas Tree which will be planted in Corner Croft in early November. The tree has been organised in conjunction with Newark and Sherwood Homes and has been donated by Mitie who have funded the tree and will plant it.

We aim to have a planting ceremony in mid November.  This will be followed by an inaugural Christmas Light Switch-On with Christmas Carols and mulled wine in December.  All dates to be announced when we have the tree planted.

Remembrance Sunday… the Parish Council has purchased 10 large poppies which you will see around the village to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Date of Next Meeting...The next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 23rd November at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Chapel.

Thurgarton Neighbourhood Plan... is now in operation and being utilised by all parties that it affects. Following 2 years of work by the Thurgarton Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, culminating in the Parish Referendum held on 4th May 2017, Newark and Sherwood District Council have announced their decision to ‘make’ the Thurgarton Neighbourhood Plan, so this now forms part of the Development Plan for Newark & Sherwood District.

We are still looking for a volunteer to take the role of Base, as part of the Thurgarton Emergency Plan. Please contact me if you are interested in taking this role or would like to know more about it..

Environment… The Autumn Village clean up will take place on 14th October. This will perform a similar job to the successful Spring Clean held in March and will involve volunteers litter picking, cleaning road signs, cleaning the war memorial and tending to the green areas of the village. Please put this date in the your diary and allocate some of your time to your lovely village.

Date of Next Meeting...The next meeting of Thurgarton Parish Council will be on Thursday, 28th September at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Chapel.
