Thurgarton Annual Parish Meeting 28th May 2026

22/06/2026

The Annual Parish meeting is an opportunity for parishioners to come together once a year to review and discuss what is happening in your community and to raise matters of concern.
Presentations arranged by the Parish Council, were made as follows:-

1. Report of the Parish Council, by Cllr Tina Tsoukatos, thanked all the volunteers – Parish Councillors, including those who had moved on this year, members of the Thurgarton Charity Committee (TCC) and others who help to make our village a good place to live, and went on to review the work undertaken by the Parish Council during the last year and what is planned in the next year. Please see the attached Chairman’s Report document.

2. Flood Alleviation Scheme, by Cllr Tina Tsoukatos, the Internal Drainage Board has confirmed the work in Thurgarton is in their schedule to commence in November 2026. The negotiations are ongoing with the landowners, both upstream and downstream from the village, for the land impacted by the natural flood management and the water storage area. The water storage area has been redesigned to accommodate Utility companies requirements.

3. Community Space and Playground Project, by Cllr Jeremy Ross, reviewed this project to date and the plans going forward, including having gained planning permission on the proposed land, completing and analysing a detailed parish survey to establish needs, engaging and working with solicitors to develop a lease agreement for the land, running a successful community engagement event to assist in developing the plan and recently starting to raise funds for the project which currently stand at £17,000 against a target of £95,000. The plan is to open the Community Space and Children’s Playground in Spring 2027. If you would like more information you can see the slides in the attached CGSPA PowerPoint presentation.

4. Village Hall Report, by Cllr Stephie Taylor, reviewed the work of the Thurgarton Community Committee (TCC) who have 9 committee members who look after Thurgarton’s main village asset including maintenance, keeping it financially viable by running events and booking it out for parties including weddings. There was wide acknowledgement and thanks for the hard work the TCC and their support team put in, week in and week out, to make the events so successful and the universally positive feedback from those hiring the hall. Please see the attached TCC PowerPoint presentation.

5. Notts Scouts – by Steve Day, provided an update on the activities at the adventure centre by Hoveringham lake. The main building has recently been redeveloped at a cost of £480,000 and will be officially opened on 6th June 2026. This new building is a significant improvement on the previous facility and includes a sedum roof and 40 solar panels and the opportunity to open to the public including an initiative “cakes by the lake” on a Thursday morning during the spring and summer season. It is hoped the new facility will allow an increase on the 2,200 young people who enjoyed activities at the centre to be increased. If you would like more information you can see the attached Notts Scouts PowerPoint presentation.

5. The Red Lion – by Simon Klucinskis, thanked the community for their continued support over the years. Locally raised funding had allowed the pub to open in Jan 2019 which was repaid. Simon and the Head Chef Kyme now own the pub outright. The World Cup matches will be shown across multiple TV’s and there is a Quiz night on the 1st Wednesday of the month. The full text of the report is available in the attached Red Lion document.

6. Fiskerton and Thurgarton Cricket Club – by Chris Clayton Chris was able to report that the club was in a strong and healthy financial position and that had allowed them to continue to invest including a new fully enclosed practice net and in the next few months a new roller for the wickets. As with a lot of clubs and organisation there is a strong reliance on a group of volunteers and this was acknowledged and thanked. The club continues to have teams in a number of weekend leagues including a Women’s team and a Sunday development team and is the home ground for the Nott’s over 60 team. Junior training is held on a Friday evening and is an opportunity to socialise as the bar is open and pizzas are served. The club is delighted to announce an Australian over 60’s touring side will be playing against the Nott’s over 60 team 5th June 2026.
This was followed by the monthly Parish Council meeting
